How is breast augmentation surgery performed with implants?
Breast augmentation surgery involves the following steps:
Anesthesia
Breast implant surgery is carried out by a plastic or cosmetic surgeon while the candidate is under general anesthesia or has felt asleep through IV sedation and can’t feel any pain or discomfort.
Making incision
There are several techniques to perform the surgery depending upon where the incisions are made. The surgeon will discuss together with the candidate about possible implant placement options before commencing the surgery and will help determine which method would suit the candidate as per her needs. The surgeon can cut:
- under the crease of the breast (called inframammary incision)
- along the edge of the areolae (called periareolar incision)
- via the armpit (called trans axillary incision).
Insertion of Breast implant
The breast implant is placed in front or behind the pectoral muscle of the chest or beneath the breast tissue through either of the three above-mentioned incisions. The placement of breast implants depends upon a few factors such as the type of the implant and how much breast enlargement is needed. The candidate can decide along with Dr. Akangsha Sharma, best breast augmentation surgeon in India, Jaipur by discussing the benefits and risks of each method and can also know which method can work best for them.
Closing the incision
Once the breast implant is secured in its place, the surgeon uses sutures to close the incision sites. Drainage tubes may also be inserted through the incisions to drain out excess body fluids or blood after the surgery. Lastly, the operated breast(s) is covered with a gauze bandage after which the candidate can return home wearing a post-surgical bra.
Breast implant options:
- Saline breast implants- These are silicone-encased implants filled with sterile salt water. Its accidental breakage inside the breasts cannot harm the body as the body will naturally absorb the saline and get rid of it through urine.
- Structured saline breast implants- These are saline-filled breast implants having an inner structure that makes them appear more natural.
- Silicone breast implants- These implants have an outer shell of silicone and a filling of silicone gel. If there is a breakage in such implants, the silicone gel may either remain safe within its shell or leak into the breasts and cause potential damage.
- Round breast implants- These implants have an overall round appearance which makes the breasts look fuller. Even if they are rotated out of their place, the breast appearance won’t change.
- Smooth breast implants- Among all the types of breast implants, these are the softest. Usually, they make the breast movements look more natural.
- Form- stable breast implants (or gummy bear implants)- These implants are composed of thicker silicone gel which makes them firmer alternatives to traditional breast implants. Even if the shell of such implants breaks, their shape won’t change. However, their incision requires a longer surgery incision in the skin.
- Textured breast implants- These implants adhere to the inside of the breasts by creating scar tissues. This stabilizes their movement inside the breasts.
Recovery from breast augmentation surgery:
Following the surgery, the candidate must take prescribed painkillers to relieve pain, and schedule follow-up visits to remove drainage tubes, gauze bandages, and stitches within a week. The candidate must not indulge in any sports activities or heavy lifting or do any labor-intensive jobs for at least 4–6 weeks. Proper care must be taken for the incision sites until it gets completely healed.
